Research Data Supporting The Course



In a study conducted at Tufts University, participants, on average, reported that they felt they had learned what they needed to know to implement the basics, they would use the information, they were more confident, comfortable and ready to teach the basics of adaptive swimming lessons to children with disabilities.

The PES model is explained and referenced throughout the training, utilizing case scenarios to enhance users' understanding of personal and environmental factors that can may impact a child with a disability or difference along with understanding the swimming skill components.

Your instructor

Dr. Marykate Galluzzo, OT, OTD is the founder of South Shore Sunfish, an at home adaptive swim program based in Braintree, MA. With 12 years of experience as a private swim instructor, she believes swimming should be accessible to individuals of all abilities. She developed this online training program through her post-professional doctorate at Tufts University in Medford, MA drawing from the principles of occupational therapy and psychology.

By profession, she is an outpatient pediatric occupational therapist at South Shore Hospital and a faculty mentor at Tufts University. She has also contributed to the SSYMCA Quincy branch and conducted private in-home lessons for families across the South Shore region. Her background includes working in early intervention, ABA therapy, and adaptive sports, with involvement in institutions including New England Disabled Sports, Adaptive Sports New England, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Charlestown and Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Her mission is to empower community based swim instructors to feel confident in teaching swimming lessons to children of all abilities.
